Tessellations are created when an artist fills a picture plane with a tiling shape. There are no gaps and no pieces that overlap. Perhaps one of the most famous artists to use tessellating shapes is M.C. Escher. This incredibly precise and surrealistic artist borrowed this technique from the architecture he studied in Spain. Islamic art and that from Ancient rome often used these geometric, complex, tiled patterns known as tessellations.
