1st Grade Artists are ALMOST finished with their Owl Eye Collages. After drawing the irises and pupils with oil pastel, we arranged bits of torn paper to create the feathers of the owl's face. Finally, we added a beak and drew feather details for a finishing touch! Artists that have finished their collages will work at some independent centers this week. Also, we have been DYING to take home our pinch pots. Each Artist will package up their pinch pots to finally bring them home!

1st Grade Artists have been working on their Owl Eyes Collage to support the learning target, "I can create a piece of artwork that demonstrates bilateral symmetry." Steady Friends helped each other to place and trace circles to create the iris and pupils of the two eyes on each Artist's paper. We selected and blended oil pastels to color the irises. Next, we selected color paper that would emphasize the eye color. Each artist began arranging torn pieces of paper around the eyes to simulate the feathers of the owls. Many chose to create a pattern with their colors! This is a meditative process that will take a few classes to complete. I can't wait to share the results!

1st Grade Artists have love for the Mitten! We used a combination of oil pastel and watercolor to create these "maps" of the UP and LP. Our steady friends helped us create a plaid and checkerboard pattern. After painting, we worked back into our pieces with oil pastel to bring out the outlines and embellish the background.
1st Grade Artists also completed their Icicle Houses. Together, we placed and drew basic shapes to create our own mansions. After coloring the details with crayons, we used liquid watercolor to fill in the space and background. For the finishing touch, we let glue drip down from the windows and roof, then sprinkled glitter all over it to create an icicle effect.
Up next, we will be working on an owl collage using torn paper. Stay tuned!

Happy New Year! Welcome back to the Art Studio! Before break, 1st Grade Artists created their pinch pots. After they were bone dry, they were fired and ready for glazing! When we returned from break, we learned how to glaze and what happens when our pinch pots go back into the kiln. The finished results are on Artsonia and will soon be in the display case outside the Art Studio.

1st Grade Artists finished their self-portraits to support the learning target, "I can use various line types to create a composition." These will be on Artsonia very soon!
We have been preparing for our clay project! 1st Grade Artists have mastered the art of pinch-pot-making by practicing with play-doh. We practiced clay procedures including set up, clean up, and wash up. 1st Grade Artists also learned about the kiln, glazes, and the different stages of clay. This week, we will create our final pinch pots, and we. are. so. EXCITED!

1st Grade Artists have finished their Harvest Corn paintings. This project is meant to support the overlapping learning target. Each artist drew and painted corn in front of clouds. Then, we created a fence with paper strips to overlap the corn. At the end of the project, we enjoyed a popcorn treat!
Up next, we will be creating a painting to support the learning target, "I can use various line types to create a composition."

1st grade Artists have started a harvest painting. We completed a guided drawing together of some corn stalks overlapping a sky background. Next, we used oil pastel to outline the different parts of the image and isolate kernels of corn. This week, we will use watercolor to paint the images and then add a fence to overlap the corn. At the end of the project, I have promised to bring a special treat for "popcorn behavior."

First Grade Artists have finished their Piet Mondrian Animals. We practiced drawing a few different type of animals, and each Artist chose one to depict in Primary Colors. In each step of the painting, we tried to mimic the style of Mondrian.
Up next, we will be working on a Harvest painting to support the learning targets:
I can use shapes to construct a composition to build recognizable forms.
I can use overlapping to create depth in a work of art.

First Grade Artists have completed their Gruffalo paintings and these are WILD. We will revisit this drawing towards the end of the school year to see how our skills have grown.
First Grade Artists have started their Mondrian unit that supports the learning targets:
I can use primary colors to create a composition.
I can use various line types to create a composition.
I can use shapes to construct a composition to build recognizable forms.
We looked at the work of Piet Mondrian and practiced using a ruler to make vertical and horizontal lines. First grade artists then started a background for a large finished painting using primary colors and Mondrian's work as inspiration.

The first week of rock painting was a blast! We still have more to go to complete our landscaping project. Your Young Artist has used acrylic paint to decorate several stones that will be included in this rock garden. This will be a permanent display at Wegienka to be enjoyed for years to come. This project will continue this coming week. Make sure your Young Artist has an art shirt to keep their school clothes clean!

Welcome back! 1st grade artists will be starting the year with two book-based projects. To begin, we will be taking part in a school-wide installation inspired by the book Only One You by Linda Kranz. Each artist will be given a stone to decorate using acrylic paint. The stones will all be displayed on the school grounds to be enjoyed for years to come.
Up next, we will spend some time with The Gruffalo! Your young artist will use basic shapes to illustrate a scene from the book.
