The Color Wheel can be divided in half. One half is warm, while the other half is cool.
Warm: Red, Orange, and Yellow
Cool: Blue, Green, and Violet
Warm colors tend to JUMP OUT while cool colors tend to recede in works of art.
Neutral colors are not found on the Color Wheel, but do show up in our world and in nature. In pigment, they are made of a mixture of colors on the color wheel. Neutral Colors: Brown, Black, Grey, and White.
Neutral colors also recede in works of art. Look at how the warm colors POP in the Picasso painting below while the cool and neutral colors fade into the background.
Three Musicians, Picasso
Warm colors are HOT and remind us of fire, the sun, and warm weather.
Cool colors are COLD and remind us of ice, grass, and popsicles.
Neutral colors are calm and quiet like being in the woods.
