Happy New Year! Welcome back to the Art Studio at Wegienka!
Y5 Artists spent their first class of the New Year working with the sensory bins. We love to learn about color, shape, and texture through play-based learning and these experiences strengthen our fine motor skills so directly. This past week, we started a Valentine's Day mixed media piece inspired by the work of Jim Dine. Each Artist worked with a steady friend to trace a large heart shape in oil pastel on a color paper of their choice. Then, we colored the inside of our heart shapes with rich, dense patches of oil pastel and treated the background with different mark-making. Up next, we will paint these with tempera, which will be resisted by the oil pastel. "Oil pastel and tempera or watercolor don't like each other. Oil pastel pushes the paint away!" |
Last week, Y5 Artists worked on fall window sun catchers. Each Artist had a leaf shape on contact paper. They ripped tissue paper to fill in the sticky space. This week, we will coat it with Acrylic Gel Medium to blend the fall colors and make it stick to a window. Look for these displayed soon at Wegienka.

Y5 Artists will start the year taking part in a school-wide art project inspired by the book Only One You by Linda Kranz. Each artist will be given a large stone to paint. These stones will be installed on the school grounds for people to enjoy for years to come. This year, we will be learn various media through play and experimentation. Y5 Artists will have opportunities to develop fine motor skills and make discoveries about their world through creative exploration. Stop by so see images of your young artist's journey. |
